Job Description
WOMEN’S HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER STATUS:
Part-time/Non-exempt (or FT) RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Health Center Services General Responsibilities: In collaboration with the affiliate Medical Director, the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner functions in an expanded role in the area of ambulatory reproductive health care. The ARNP will follow affiliate medical protocols as she provides primary reproductive health care for women of all ages. The ARNP must follow Planned Parenthood Federation of America Standards and Guidelines.
The ARNP
- Secures a complete health history, including obstetric, gynecologic, contraceptive, medical, surgical, sexual, family health and psychosocial, and record findings accurately and succinctly.
- Performs physical examinations with special emphasis on the reproductive system, including breast examination, pelvic examinations, cancer screening tests, diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), and other types of more specialized procedures as may be indicated by medical policy.
- Performs and orders diagnostic studies as indicated and permitted by affiliate medical protocols.
- Diagnoses and treats minor deviations from the normal, using prescribed protocols and consulting with the physician as needed.
- Provides relevant health instruction to include family planning, nutrition, smoking cessation, sexual counseling, and principles of health promotion and maintenance.
- Collaborates with the health team and other community agencies and resources (e.g., physicians, local health departments, social service, nutritionists, dentists, and parent education groups), through joint planning and coordination of activities, in providing comprehensive care.
- Works to ensure understanding and acceptance, by colleagues, other professionals, consumers, and the community at large, of the role of the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Provides patient care and oversight for abortion services.
Specific Responsibilities
- Provides primary reproductive health care to women.
- Performs, orders and interprets routine laboratory tests.
- Provides general health supervision, health maintenance, education, and counseling to women during the life cycles.
- Recognizes common non-gynecological medical problems and other deviations from normal and provides management or referrals as appropriate
- Obtains a gynecological history, performs a gynecological examination, and obtains diagnostic studies and laboratory tests relevant to gynecology.
- Recognizes gynecological deviations from normal, formulates a diagnosis in collaboration with a physician, and provides education and management, or refers when appropriate.
- Provides education and counseling in areas of health maintenance and reproductive health care, such as infertility, sexuality, risk reduction activities, family planning, family dynamics, breast health, nutrition and smoking cessation.
- Obtains an obstetric history, performs a prenatal examination, and/or interprets appropriate diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests relevant to obstetrics.
- Provides appropriate prenatal education and management for women with low risk pregnancies.
- Requests and/or performs specific diagnostic procedures, with appropriate consultation with the physician.
- Recognizes common gynecologic disorders, and provides treatment within affiliate medical protocols.
- Manages therapy for contraception and for specific gynecologic disorders, in collaboration with the physician as needed.
- Correlates history, physical data, and laboratory results to select and carry out a contraceptive program tailored to the patient’s needs.
- Interprets scientific studies based on knowledge of basic research principles.
- Recognizes ethical, legal, and professional issues inherent in providing care to women throughout the life cycle.
- Provided medically accurate, non-biased medical treatment and information regarding adoption, parenting, and abortion.
Qualifications
- License or certification for advanced registered nurse practitioner within the state.
- Must apply to accept Medicaid
- Dispensing license through Florida Department of Health D. Nurse practitioner training and subsequent experience in reproductive health care.
- National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties or certification by another recognized body, recommended but not required.
